The Caves and Tuff: the "Pirriatura" Favignanesi
For decades, the man managed to extract from the heart of Favignana, a truly extraordinary stone: the Calcarenite. Used especially in the architecture and construction, the limestone is a porous stone compact but at the same time gives fine-grained white in color.
Commonly called "tuff", the construction of buildings, R.T.A. , homes, with this material, it proved to be one of the oldest and peculiar activities of Favignana island.
The mining of limestone, was so intense, that the island was "carved out" so that you are facing, more than in the quarries, a veritable cathedrals: the land was shaped resulting in varying shape and striking at the hands of experts "artists" tuff extractors, the "pirriatura" (mason).
... And so they gave birth to the Hypogeum Gardens of Favignana
The disused quarries in the hinterland of Favignana were used by the islanders in an original and intelligent: they were transformed into gardens and orchards. In fact, during your stay on the island, including Cala Rossa, Bue Marino, Punta Fanfalo and Lido Burrone, you can see the edges of the roads the clay pits in which plants grow luxuriantly.
Thanks to the mild climate in winter and hot in summer, thanks to the protection with very high walls, thanks to the sunny spot, the islanders have managed to make the most of a habitat suitable for the vegetative growth so recreating a "natural greenhouse", which allowed to have a warm climate in winter and cool in summer.
Within the Hypogeum gardens, you can admire many vegetables but especially beautiful fruit trees such as fig, almond, pear, orange and prickly pear.
